Guide Dogs

Guide dogs are specially trained dogs to provide mobility assistance for individuals who are blind or visually impaired to travel safely from one place to another. They do this by navigating sidewalks, finding curbs and stairs, crossing streets safely and avoiding obstacles including hanging ones.

Guide dogs know left and right and are helpful with object identification when asked to "find" a door, counter, elevator, escalator, sidewalk, chair, etc.

People who receive guide dogs will generally attend team training on the KSDS campus in Washington, Kansas for 21 days. Students will stay in the handicap accessible apartments on campus provided by KSDS Assistance Dogs. Meals will be provided by civic organizations and other volunteers.

Before filling out the initial application for the Guide Program, please take time to read the brochure attached. To begin the process of receiving a Guide Dog, please fill out the application request form. The application has several phases and includes requests for a video and an interview. If you have any questions about applying for a guide dog, contact Letha Nelson, Client Services, at lnelson@ksds.org or call 785-325-2256 ext 115.
